SPARE

‘SPARE’(School Project on Application of Resources and Energy) is an international school project that educates secondary school pupils in the ideas of sustainable development (http://www.spareworld.org). It encourages young people to change their lifestyles by applying optimal technologies and utilizing the least harmful energy sources. ‘SPARE’ builds the awareness of the coming generations by teaching them how environmental problems are linked to the utilization of energy and stimulating the general interest for scientific investigation. The pupils then present their findings to their families and neighborhood. NGOs also play an active role in ‘SPARE’ by initiating the project and helping to organize activities in the school system.

‘Baikal Environmental Wave’ has been involved in this project since 2005 and helps secondary schools in the local area to become involved in sustainable development activities and take part in the regional, national and international ‘SPARE’ competition “Energy and Environment”. Secondary schools from the Irkutsk region won first place in the national competition in both 2006 and 2007 and are now actively preparing for the 2008 regional competition with the help and support of ‘Baikal Environmental Wave’.
