Coordinator of work with the authorities and business, coordinator of the campaign, “Baikal is worth more than oil” (Marina Rikhvanova)

Together with the Irkutsk oblast united organisation of trade unions and other NGOs, the meeting ‘We will protect you, our Baikal’ was initialized, in which approximately 5,000 people participated.

At the meeting a resolution was made with the demand to move the course of the pipeline (Eastern Siberia- Pacific) behind the watershed of Baikal. The resolution of the meeting was sent, with 16,000 signatures, to President Putin, the Chairman of the Russian Government, the State Duma, the Federal Council, UNESCO and the banks financing the Transneft project.

The meeting activated the people and organisations of Irkutsk and other cities into a series of actions in defense of Baikal, in which participated around 15,000 people. In Irkutsk took place another two meetings held on 9th and 22nd April and a few pickets. Baikal Environmental Wave provided its support in the preparation of meetings and pickets in defense of the lake in other Russian cities in the framework of Russian action (21-22 April), and also provided a video studio in St. Petersburg with informational aid in the preparation of a short film about the problem of constructing the pipeline.

The organizers of meetings in Irkutsk initialized the creation of Baikal Movement, and organized a daily issue of the group’s news, which was distributed through e-mail.

On 13-14 April an organized visit of the first secretary of the FRG Embassy Secretary Hubert Shmalts, meetings with trade unions, school of public policy, the deputy of the Regional Parliament, activists from Baikal Movement with the aim of gathering information about the attitudes of different groups of the local population towards Transneft’s plans to construct a pipeline on the shores of Baikal.

The information about the problem was represented for the media; about 30 interviews were conducted for regional, national and international journalists.

Press services/video studio (Olga Belskaya)

In the March-April period the press service and video studio took an active part in the campaign “Baikal is worth more than oil”. Meetings and pickets were organized, materials were prepared for the media and press conferences took place.

Three press releases were prepared (17th March, 5th April, 20th April). On the 20th April a press conference on the preparations for the anti-pipeline meeting on Earth Day was held in the BEW Infocentre. Video material shot by BEW at the first meeting in Irkutsk (18th March) has been sent to Moscow to be shown to journalists during the press conference in the Independent press centre with the participation of Marina Rihvanova, co-chair of Baikal Wave. This particular video material and some extractsfrom the BEW film “Prevention” has been passed on to the group of the television channel REN-TV, “The Week with Marianna Maximovskaya” and TVC in order to highlight people’s protests against the construction of the pipeline. Together with the organising committee of “Baikal Movement” a press conference was held on the 5 April in advance of the meeting of the 9th April. The BEW press service actively participated in meetings with the collaborating organisations of “Baikal Movement” and in the preparation and highlighting of events linked with protests against the pipeline.

Issue 71 of the Digest of ecological information was released. 16 new items were placed on the BEW website.

The BEW video studio took part in an auction organised by the federal agency of culture and cinematography with a packet of documents and the script application for the shooting of the film “Natives, unite!” and won the right to make the film with the full state support.

Library/ Video library (Vera Yakovlevna Pakhomova)

The BEW library (reading room) and video library services were used by 111 people. The librarian took part in events at the Irkutsk energy college, “Problems of Baikal”.

Volunteer services (Natalya Podkovoirova)

1.Participation in the tourist exhibition in the Sib-expocentre.
2.Meeting with the German volunteers and the organisation of their work both in the office and in the boarding school for deaf children. Two times a week Juliane and Judith visit a boarding school and conduct non-formal classes for the children on nature, people, and ecological problems and also tell them about the lives of people in Germany and take part in events at the school. As well as this, the girls take an active part in the “Baikal is worth more than oil” campaign: they helped collect signatures in support against the construction of the oil pipeline in the watershed of lake Baikal, they translated into German a text of resolutions taken at a meeting in the defense of Baikal and distributed them to different addresses in Germany with the aim of attracting international societies to the campaign.
3.Communication with potential volunteers, replying to e-mails which were sent through the website.
4.Organisation of work for interns from the Pedagogical University and the College of Construction and Enterprise.
5.Participation in the organisation and undertaking of a meeting in the defence of Baikal and in the ensuing collection of signatures and work with citizens who wish to participate in the campaign against the construction of the pipeline.
6.Preparation for the participation in a seminar for the development of European Voluntary Service (communication with organisations, preparation of presentations).
7.The distribution of the publications of “Baikal Environmental Wave” (preparation of a list of our products and services for the website.)
8.Organisation of a BEW staff meeting with a representative from the Centre of Alternative Technologies, Sara Turnbull, addressing the issue of the development of energy saving in schools.

Department of ecotourism (Yana Ogarkova)

1.Participation in the international exhibition, ‘Baikal-tour’ in the Sib Expo Centre from 3-5 March with presentations at the stand of ecological tourism organisation. Organisation and conduction, according to the framework of the exhibition, of a round table, “The Echo of Hannover - the Principles of Eco-tourism”; 30 people took part. The participants of the round table made an appeal to President Putin to reconsider the unacceptability of the construction of the pipeline on the shore of Baikal.
In the course of the exhibition contact was made with 70 organisations conducting tourist activity around Baikal. The data base on tourism has been increased and renewed. Flyers, booklets, stickers, posters, magazines and bags were used to great popularity.
2.In March and April the rubrics of the ecotoursim section of the BEW website were renewed by way of 3 articles booklets and placards.
3.Photographic material and articles on the “Baikal Crystal” have been prepared.
4.As requested by Geenpeace Russia, a trip to Baikal has been organized for the music critic Artemy Troitsky in connection with the opening of the Baikal expedition to calculate the number of nerpas.
5.A trip to Baikal has been organized for a diplomat from Germany, Herr Shmalts and his wife.
6.Together with the forestry protection of Shamanka an application for a grant has been written to the USAID foundation for the project “Pribaikal Switzerland- Shamanka” .The result will be known after 25th May.
7.Photo coverage of the meetings and pickets of 18.03, 9.04, 22.04 in defense of Baikal has been prepared.
