The
general goal of the project is to foster understanding of "sustainable
development" among the citizens and leadership of the Baikal region
and to facilitate the realization of and transition to action directed at
achieving sustainable development.
The
following services will be provided to ensure effective work towards this
end.
Press-service
and Video Production
The central aim of the Media Department of the Infocentre is in constant
cooperation with the media in order to share information about the activities
of the Infocentre, and cover themes which are related to ecology, sustainable
development, and civil society. Press-service materials are regularly published
on our website and in our own environmental digest and are also broadcast
on local television.
At
Baikal Environmental Wave's Infocenter, the video studio works to create
its own films and other materials: short documentaries, news reports, and
public announcements. These materials provide substantial support for our
campaigns and actions, which we carry out together with our partner organizations.
They are also an excellent medium for environmental education.
Publishing
Activities
Our publishing activities include the creation, preparation, and publication
of single edition brochures, booklets, and leaflets. We also provide translations
when necessary, issue materials for environmental education, and periodically
publish our journal, "Wave," and bulletin "Orlinga."
Supplying
Information
The goal of this service is the collection, processing, and delivery
of information in a form comfortable for the user. It encompasses our nonprofit
environmental video library of 230 films, which are available for rental
or can be viewed by clients on site, and an open environmental library of
nearly 2500 books and Russian and foreign periodicals. The library collection
in constantly being expanded with new literature and computer data bases
covering various themes.
Distribution
of Printed Material
A large part of Baikal Environmental Wave's work, as an information
center, is the dissemination of information throughout Irkutsk oblast, the
republic of Buryatia, Chita oblast, and in other regions to a lesser degree.
This service oversees the distribution of the entire production of Baikal
Environmental Wave: the journal "Volna," the environmental information
digest, brochures, leaflets, and video collections, all of which facilitate
the development of environmental education. Additionally, the service gathers
feedback from the readers of our journal through correspondence, individual
meetings in Irkutsk, and business trips to other cities in Irkutsk oblast,
which also provide opportunities to identify and attract new readers and
potential authors, further distribute information about environmental problems,
and introduce our organization through presentations and talks. This information
distribution often helps local residents to better understand various problems
and identify ways to resolve them. Information distribution is intended to
focus people's attention on environmental problems, heighten the activity
of local groups, and encourage citizens to participate in civic life and
decision making.
Educational
Activities. Seminars, Training Sessions, Conferences: Systematic Provision
of Information
Priority is given to the promotion of the principles of sustainable
development, and our organization decided to conduct ongoing courses for
the wider public on this theme. Courses are conducted in different locations
in the region and at the office of Baikal Environmental Wave. The course
content can be fairly flexible, and changes depending on the participants.
However, its core is to inform people about the basic principles of sustainable
development and help them undertake practical steps towards its realization.
The course is titled: "Natural and Social Aspects of the Concept of
a Sustainable Society (What every person can do to facilitate the sustainable
development of society)."
Volunteer
Service
Our volunteer service is responsible for the organization of volunteer
work within thematic areas of activity, as well searching for, attracting,
and motivating volunteers.
